News Release - Robert “Whitey” McKown Fund to be established

To honor the life of the late Robert “Whitey” McKown, the Klussendorf Memorial Association and the McKown family are planning to establish the Robert “Whitey” McKown Fund to be jointly held by the Klussendorf Memorial Association and National Dairy Shrine. The fund will grant scholarships and awards to outstanding dairy youth and breeders.

The Robert “Whitey” McKown Award is being made possible by the family and friends of the 1997 Honorary Klussendorf member. Whitey joined the HolsteinWorld staff in 1956 and became widely respected as he traveled nationally and internationally, reporting on shows, sales, meetings, and other Holstein events. The 1987 National Dairy Shrine president also developed MooKown Holsteins at Belleville, N.Y. The family, friends, and Klussendorf Memorial Association is encouraging all those who would like to honor Whitey McKown to make a contribution to the Robert “Whitey” McKown Fund. Checks can be made out to “National Dairy Shrine” and should include the designation Robert “Whitey” McKown Fund in the memo. Checks may be mailed to Dr. David Selner, Executive Director, National Dairy Shrine, P.O. Box 1, Maribel, WI 54227. All contributions are tax deductible and will be acknowledged via letter by National Dairy Shrine.

At the time of Robert’s death, he still maintained his well-known McKown Holstein herd. In order to help raise money for the newly established scholarship which will be awarded annually at World Dairy Expo through National Dairy Shrine and the Klussendorf Memorial Association, MooKown Pronto R Loren will be auctioned off at the New York Holstein Association’s Spring Carousel Sale on April 10, 2009.

The Klussendorf Memorial Association, considered by many as the Hall of Fame for Dairy Cattle Exhibitors, began in 1937 in memory of Arthur B. Klussendorf, considered the outstanding dairy cattle showman of his time. Each year, the top dairy cattle exhibitor from North America is presented the Klussendorf Memorial trophy which goes to the person who exemplifies all the basic principles of Arthur B. Klussendorf which include character, sportsmanship, ability, and endeavor.
