NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE ANNOUNCES A NEW VETERINARIAN AWARD - April 1, 2010
Maribel, Wis.– Young dairy veterinarians can apply for a $5,000 grant for professional development which will ultimately help a young dairy veterinarian better serve their clients. The award is available in a collaborative project with the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, National Dairy Shrine, and a generous sponsor AgriLabs.

DAIRY INTERNSHIP DIRECTORY AVAILABLE - October 27, 2009
College students who are looking for an internship can find an assortment of possibilities on the Dairy Shrine website. The directory currently contains 36 different internships across the country available to college students. Because some of the internship positions have more than one intern, the actual number of offerings totals 69. There are opportunities for students to take internships in communications, public relations, marketing, on-farm consulting, youth education, and company development. ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT AND DIRECTORS - October 20, 2009
Maribel, Wis. – At the 60th annual meeting of the National Dairy Shrine, Corey Geiger, associate editor of Hoard’s Dairyman, Fort Atkinson, Wis., was elected president of the organization. Meanwhile, Mary Shank Creek, an Ayrshire breeder and dairy producer from Hagerstown, Md., was chosen president-elect. Elected to the executive committee along with Geiger and Creek were: Dale Olver, University Park, Pa.; Ken Crandall, Provo, Utah; Erick Metzger, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and immediate past president Kevin Stiles, Ankeny, Iowa. The National Dairy Shrine board of directors consists of 21 members. This year, four new directors were elected to the board. They included Coleen Jones, Craigsville, Va.; David Jones, Stillwater, Okla.; David Pierson, Lake City, Minn.; and Bob Rowe, DVM., Verona, Wis. Also receiving recognition was Bernie Heisner, Columbus, Ohio who won the 4-E Award.

DR. WILLIAM SANDINE HONORED AS NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE'S 2009 GUEST OF HONOR
Dr. William E. (“Bill”) Sandine, professor emeritus of microbiology at Oregon State University and a pioneering developer of applied manufacturing methods for cultured dairy products that are widely used throughout the world today, has been named the 2009 National Dairy Shrine Guest of Honor. The prestigious award is given each year to salute a contemporary leader for his or her outstanding achievements and contributions that benefit the dairy industry.

DUANE CONANT HONORED AS DAIRY SHRINE'S 2009 DISTINGUISHED CATTLE BREEDER
At a young age, Duane Conant of Conant Acres, Inc., Canton, Maine, developed a great love for registered Holstein cattle and a belief that these animals could be marketed for profit. It was this desire that led Conant to be one of the first dairy producers to participate in the global embryo market in the early 1980s.

Each year National Dairy Shrine honors three or four living or deceased “pioneers” of the dairy industry. Nominated by members of National Dairy Shrine and selected by an anonymous committee, these Pioneers are honored at the National Dairy Shrine banquet at World Dairy Expo. Their portraits are then permanently displayed at the National Dairy Shrine Visitors’ Center in Fort Atkinson, Wis.

2009 NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE HONORS PROGRESSIVE DAIRY PRODUCERS
For the past decade, the National Dairy Shrine has recognized young dairy producers ages 21 to 45 for their outstanding dairy farming practices. Each recipient receives a $2,000 educational travel award to use out-of-state to observe a dairy activity such as a management conference, trade show, seminar, or dairy herd visit to gain knowledge or new ideas to implement in their dairy operation.

BILL WALTERS ENDOWS $189,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS WITH MANITOWOC MILK AND DAIRY SHRINE
Manitowoc, Wis. For four decades the late Bill Walters covered the dairy industry in northeast Wisconsin as a radio personality for WCUB radio based in Manitowoc. At the station, he served as chief announcer, program director, and later as farm director until his retirement in 1992. The man known to his radio audience as Bill Walters was first known to his family as Bill Zummach.

MCKOWN FUND TO BE ESTABLISHED
To honor the life of the late Robert “Whitey” McKown, the Klussendorf Memorial Association and the McKown family are planning to establish the Robert “Whitey” McKown Fund to be jointly held by the Klussendorf Memorial Association and National Dairy Shrine. The fund will grant scholarships and awards to outstanding dairy youth and breeders.

SELNER TO SUCCEED CORE AS NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Following an extensive search by National Dairy Shrine’s six-person executive committee, Dr. David Selner was chosen to succeed Maurice Core as the seventh executive director for the 59-year-old organization dedicated to preserving dairy history, promoting the dairy industry, and developing future dairy leaders. Selner will officially begin his role as executive director for National Dairy Shrine on August 1, 2008.

NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE ISSUES MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE
National Dairy Shrine has issued a Membership Challenge to dairy companies, associations, and cooperatives to help recruit more members for the organization. Currently there are more than 18,500 dairy leaders among Dairy Shrine’s ranks, but the group also believes the staff and board members of many key dairy entities have not yet joined. The one-time, lifetime membership costs $50 and it makes a tremendous difference in the lives of many people. Last year alone, National Dairy Shrine awarded more than $31,000 in scholarships to young people. In addition, NDS preserves dairy history, honors key industry leaders, and maintains a history center in Ft. Atkinson, Wis.
