National Dairy Shrine Establishes Cornerstone Award to Recognize Industry Partners - October 12 , 2010
The National Dairy Shrine introduced a new Cornerstone Award this year to recognize corporate sponsors who have provided long-term support and exceptional contributions to National Dairy Shrine. The Cornerstone Award will not be presented annually, but will be bestowed at the discretion of the board of directors to deserving organizations. The name for the award was chosen to reflect the fact that the support of these companies provides a significant contribution to the foundation of National Dairy Shrine. Two outstanding partners of National Dairy Shrine were honored at the 61 st annual banquet, held September 30, 2010 at World Dairy Expo in Madison , Wis. The inaugural Cornerstone Awards recognized Dairy Farmers of America and Hoard's Dairyman.

National Dairy Shrine elects new President and Directors - October 12 , 2010
At the 61th annual meeting of the National Dairy Shrine, Mary Shank Creek, an Ayrshire breeder and dairy producer from Hagerstown , Md. , was elected president of the organization. Meanwhile, Erick Metzger, the Manager of National All Jersey from Reynoldsburg , Ohio was chosen president-elect. Elected to the executive committee along with Creek and Metzger were: Dale Olver, University Park, Pa.; Ken Crandall, Provo, Utah; Maggie Murphy, Summerfield, Florida; and immediate past president Corey Geiger, Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. The National Dairy Shrine board of directors consists of 21 members. This year, two new directors were elected to the board. They included Nancy Feeney, Davenport, Iowa and Fred Hendricks, Bucyrus, Ohio.

DAIRY INTERNSHIP DIRECTORY AVAILABLE - August, 2010
College students who are looking for an internship can find an assortment of possibilities on the Dairy Shrine website. The directory currently contains 36 different internships across the country available to college students. Because some of the internship positions have more than one intern, the actual number of offerings totals 69. There are opportunities for students to take internships in communications, public relations, marketing, on-farm consulting, youth education, and company development. Nine college students from across the country have been recognized by the National Dairy Shrine (NDS) for their excellence in leadership skills, involvement in activities, academic accomplishments, and interest in the dairy industry. TWO HERDS NAMED PROGRESSIVE DAIRY PRODUCERS BY NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE - July, 2010
Maribel, Wis. - For the past decade, the National Dairy Shrine has recognized young dairy producers ages 21 to 45 for their outstanding dairy farming practices. Each recipient receives a $2,000 educational travel award to use out-of-state to observe a dairy activity such as a management conference, trade show, seminar, or dairy herd visit to gain knowledge or new ideas to implement in their dairy operation.

Maribel, Wis. – Each year, National Dairy Shrine honors living or deceased “pioneers” of the dairy industry. Nominated by members of National Dairy Shrine and selected by an anonymous committee, the Pioneer Award recipients are honored at the National Dairy Shrine banquet at World Dairy Expo. Then, their portraits are permanently displayed at the National Dairy Shrine Visitors’ Center in Fort Atkinson, Wis.

JACKSON AND KASPER 2010 McCULLOUGH SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS - July, 2010
Maribel, Wis. - Each year, two scholarships are awarded by National Dairy Shrine in memory of Professor Marshall E. McCullough, the well-respected nutrition researcher and educator from Georgia. Eligible students must be entering their freshmen year of college and plan to major in dairy/animal science or agricultural journalism with a dairy emphasis.

Maribel, Wis. – National Dairy Shrine has named Jacob Achen of Sauk Centre, Minn. winner of the 2010 Maurice Core Scholarship. This $1,000 award is given in honor of Maurice Core, a long-time leader in the Jersey breed and the Dairy Shrine. The Core Scholarship recognizes a college freshman planning a career in the dairy industry and working toward a degree in dairy science or a related field and emphasizes leadership and volunteerism.

2010 IAGER DAIRY SCHOLARSHIP WINNER - July, 2010
Maribel , Wis. - The National Dairy Shrine is pleased to announce that Casey J. Arlig of Friendship, N.Y., is the recipient of the Iager Dairy Scholarship this year. The Iager Scholarship for $1,000 is awarded annually to a second-year student in a two-year agricultural school to pursue a career in the dairy industry. It is based on academic standing, leadership ability, interest in the dairy industry and plans for the future. Casey is currently enrolled at SUNY Cobleskill and is majoring in dairy production and management.

Maribel , WI . – Calvin Covington of King, North Carolina, who spent more than two decades barnstorming the U.S. to educate cheese makers about the yield and profitability advantages of using milk with high butterfat and protein content, has been named 2010 National Dairy Shrine Guest of Honor. 2010 NDS GRADUATE DAIRY PRODUCTION AWARD PRESENTED TO NEW YORK PRODUCER - July, 2010
Maribel , Wis. —The National Dairy Shrine announced the recipient of the 2010 Graduate Dairy Production Award as Timothy Northrop of York , New York . The award was first presented in 2009 and was created to recognize, encourage and assist qualified four-year agricultural college graduates to pursue careers in commercial dairying and to gain ownership of dairy cattle to grow the size of their herd. The award is sponsored by Elanco Animal Health, and is awarded annually to a candidate who applies during their second to fourth year after college graduation.

Maribel , Wis. - The National Dairy Shrine (NDS) and Dairy Management Inc (DMI) are proud to announce that $8,500 in scholarships have been awarded to college students in agriculture or related fields. Elizabeth Olson received the $1,500 scholarship and seven other $1000 scholarships were also awarded. The NDS/DMI scholarships encourage students to pursue careers in dairy product marketing.

NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE ISSUES MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE
National Dairy Shrine has issued a Membership Challenge to dairy companies, associations, and cooperatives to help recruit more members for the organization. Currently there are more than 18,500 dairy leaders among Dairy Shrine’s ranks, but the group also believes the staff and board members of many key dairy entities have not yet joined. The one-time, lifetime membership costs $50 and it makes a tremendous difference in the lives of many people. Last year alone, National Dairy Shrine awarded more than $31,000 in scholarships to young people. In addition, NDS preserves dairy history, honors key industry leaders, and maintains a history center in Ft. Atkinson, Wis.

Maribel, Wis. – At the 60th annual meeting of the National Dairy Shrine, Corey Geiger, associate editor of Hoard’s Dairyman, Fort Atkinson, Wis., was elected president of the organization. Meanwhile, Mary Shank Creek, an Ayrshire breeder and dairy producer from Hagerstown, Md., was chosen president-elect. Elected to the executive committee along with Geiger and Creek were: Dale Olver, University Park, Pa.; Ken Crandall, Provo, Utah; Erick Metzger, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and immediate past president Kevin Stiles, Ankeny, Iowa. The National Dairy Shrine board of directors consists of 21 members. This year, four new directors were elected to the board. They included Coleen Jones, Craigsville, Va.; David Jones, Stillwater, Okla.; David Pierson, Lake City, Minn.; and Bob Rowe, DVM., Verona, Wis. Also receiving recognition was Bernie Heisner, Columbus, Ohio who won the 4-E Award.

DUANE CONANT HONORED AS DAIRY SHRINE'S 2009 DISTINGUISHED CATTLE BREEDER
At a young age, Duane Conant of Conant Acres, Inc., Canton, Maine, developed a great love for registered Holstein cattle and a belief that these animals could be marketed for profit. It was this desire that led Conant to be one of the first dairy producers to participate in the global embryo market in the early 1980s.

SELNER TO SUCCEED CORE AS NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Following an extensive search by National Dairy Shrine’s six-person executive committee, Dr. David Selner was chosen to succeed Maurice Core as the seventh executive director for the 59-year-old organization dedicated to preserving dairy history, promoting the dairy industry, and developing future dairy leaders. Selner will officially begin his role as executive director for National Dairy Shrine on August 1, 2008.
